Far From the Western Front

Here’s a short list of some of the sources we’ve found most helpful – and interesting! – while we’ve been researching South Asian experiences of the First World War.

Original source material

There are hundreds of photographs, posters and objects relating to the Indian Army in the Imperial War Museum and the National Army Museum.

Amitav Ghosh’s wonderful blog has translated excerpts of Sisir Sarbadhikari’s diary.

At the British Library, you can read letters to and from South Asian soldiers on the Western Front. David Omissi’s Indian Voices of the First World War includes many of these letters as well as notes and an interesting introduction.

Seconday sources

The World’s Warby David Olusoga is a great introduction to a way of looking at the First World War which goes far beyond what you learn in a British classroom.
